We hear so much today about cutting your sodium intake. The dietary guidelines for sodium is 2300 mg for an adult with no health problems. If you are over fifty, have high blood pressure, diabetic or have kidney disease the daily level recommended for you would be 1500 mg. One teaspoon of table salt has 2325 mg of sodium, more than the daily recommendation for an adult.
Your alternative to these foods would be those where whole grains and whole wheat are listed as the first ingredient. There are plenty of whole wheat and whole grain breads, pastas, crackers, etc available at just about every market. So all you have to do is make the simple switch. These foods will provide complex carbohydrates to your body. That allows your body to process the food more slowly, help keep you full, and help keep your blood sugar levels low.
The one thing obviously missing from the graphic is exercise. The old food pyramid had a guy running up the side of the pyramid to convey that we should get moving. I am not really sure how they could have worked in exercise in to the plate theme. Maybe it’s not needed, since these are dietary guidelines. But just about any dietitian or physician will mention exercise immediately after telling us to eat right.
Don’t forget about all of the hidden amounts of sodium you are consuming. If you are eating prepared or processed foods, you are consuming large amounts of sodium that is used to preserve the food.
